A Guru stood before his excited followers. He held them with a stare and there was
He picked up a large empty glass jar and began to fill it with rocks. When he could
get no more in, he asked his disciples if the jar was full?
They agreed that it was. So the Guru took a bag of small pebbles and tipped them
in shaking the jar gentle as he did so. The small pebbles, of course slipped into
the gaps between the rocks. His disciples laughed.
Again, he asked his followers if the jar was now full? They agreed that now it was.
So the guru then took up a container of finest sand and poured it into the jar where
of course, it filled all the remaining gaps.
"I want you," said the Guru holding up the jar, "To recognize this as your life.
"The rocks represent - your family, your partner, your health, your children - anything
that is so important to you that were you to lose it, you would be devastated.
"The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but are less important…. Your
job, your house, your car, your material life.
"The sand is everything else. The petty things.
"If you were to put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there would be no
room for the rocks.
"The same goes for your life.
"If you spend all your time and energy on the petty things, the material things,
you will never have room for the things that are truly the most important.
"Be clear what your priorities are. The rest is just pebbles and sand."
